Cervical cancer is a preventable yet devastating disease, affecting thousands of women worldwide. With January recognized as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, it’s an opportunity to spotlight the importance of education, early detection, and actionable insights in addressing this public health challenge. At ZoomRx, we try to better understand the patient journey through doctor-patient conversations in efforts to raise awareness and support patient-centric healthcare strategies.

Current Landscape of Cervical Cancer Awareness

Cervical cancer remains a significant health concern, despite being largely preventable through HPV vaccination and regular cervical cancer screening.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women, with over 660,000 new cases diagnosed globally each year.
  • Lack of awareness, stigma surrounding HPV, and fear of procedures are common barriers preventing women from seeking timely screening and vaccination.

These challenges underscore the importance of fostering open dialogues between doctors and their patients to combat misconceptions and encourage preventive care.

What Doctor-Patient Conversations Reveal About Cervical Cancer Screening

By observing real-world observations, we are reminded of the importance of personal connections as a critical factor shaping early detection of cervical cancer.

  • Physician Strategies: Doctors use regular frequently check-ins and planned communication points as opportunities to reassure patients, demonstrating the importance of regular screening to comprehensive patient care.

In this example, we hear a doctor reminding their patient of their recent clean scans and their proactive plan for early detection as reassurance.

HCP: Now this does not bypass the mammogram. I know your big concern is breast cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, I still want you to get a well-woman exam. And it looks like your last one was, looking here, looks like you had one about eight months ago.
Patient: Yes.
HCP: And now one came back fine, okay?
Patient: Okay.

  • Patient Concerns: To encourage an open and trusting relationship, it is important to give a patient the space to share their concerns.

In this example a doctor switches from the logistics of routine testing and takes the time to hear out their patient’s concerns. They then validate their fears and anxieties before continuing with the appointment.

HCP: So colon cancer nothing beats a colonoscopy, mammogram still very good for breast cancer, cervical cancer pap smear still ideal and I know that you've had a lot of worries with your family history.
Patient: Yeah. I'm concerned because I had an uncle who died young age from Hodgkin's disease, my mom is elderly and she has a lot of different types of cancer bladder cancer, colon cancer and, you know, it's just concerning to me with a family history of I going to, you know, develop cancer and when and what type and, you know, I have a funny protein in my blood I believe that you found and so you know I'm just anxious about it really.
HCP So that's understandable. Cancer's terrifying, more people have heart disease than cancer but I think cancer scares people more.

Improving the Patient Journey with Data-Driven Insights

Navigating the patient journey in cervical cancer care often involves addressing both emotional and logistical challenges. It can be very overwhelming to receive a positive diagnosis or disease progression; that should be accommodated when presenting new information about treatment options following a diagnosis.

  • Balancing emotional support with simple clear information and guidance from healthcare providers is critical in empowering patients to make informed decisions.

In this example a doctor weaves in emotional support with reassurance through a concise explanation of their rationale for steps taken and actionable next steps to look ahead to.

HCP: Unfortunately, those PET scan shows that you have new lesions within both lungs as well as lymph nodes within your abdomen. The PET CT is very suggestive of recurrence of the cervical cancer. I would like to repeat the biopsy to confirm that we are dealing with cervical cancer. It is very unlikely that it is a different cancer type. Once it is confirmed, I would like to start you on a treatment with immunotherapy. And you may ask why I may be choosing immunotherapy over chemotherapy. Because initial testing on the cancer cells, which was done when you were initially diagnosed with the cervical cancer, show that you would be very sensitive to immunotherapy. Do you have any questions so far?
Patient: No. How could this happen?
HCP: So, you know, some patients have relapsed very quickly. Unfortunately, your cancer cells are somewhat resistant to chemotherapy. They are just like growing despite the most aggressive chemotherapy drugs you received. Those patients we call them chemotherapy-refractory. So, there are many other chemotherapy drugs that we may offer you, but the initial test results from the cancer cells when you were initially diagnosed two years ago show that immunotherapy would work very well for you.
